My family has used Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s recipes for so long, I have learned many by heart. We have tried both Anthony’s Vital Wheat Gluten and Bob’s Red Mill Vital Wheat Gluten with success. Beginner’s note: if you want to try your hand at seitan, buying a smaller sized bag will make one recipe, and then if you enjoy the results, which I certainly did, you can find larger, much less expensive options such as Bob’s Red Mill’s 25 pound bag.

Hyaluronic acid, which is traditionally not vegan, can now be sourced through microbial fermentation and may contain elements of wheat or sweet potato.

An additional note about our oceans

A part of being vegan and cruelty free is to consider the health and safety of our oceans, especially if you are using sunscreen at the beach or on a cruise. All of the brands we have suggested are reef-friendly. According to Save the Reef’s Sunscreen Guide, here is a list of ingredients to avoid when buying sunscreens: Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Homosalate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, PABA, Parabens, Triclosan, Any nanoparticles or “nano-sized” zinc or titanium (if it doesn’t explicitly say “micro-sized” or “non-nano” and it can rub in, it’s probably nano-sized), any form of microplastic, such as “exfoliating beads.”

To ensure effective protection from the harmful effects of the sun, it’s important to choose a vegan sunscreen that meets certain criteria. As mentioned earlier, animal-derived ingredients should be avoided, and a broad-spectrum formula that blocks both UVA and UVB rays is essential. One common ingredient that can provide these benefits is zinc oxide, which also has the added benefit of reducing redness. Our unique family historical discovery has led us to such places as fishing villages on the California coast, Japanese Internment camps in Arizona, a landmark storefront in the Canadian LGBTQIA+ equality movement, the early home of a young married couple in the Midwest, the landmarks of a rich childhood in pre-war New York City, and pre-war immigration detention centers on two coasts. This journey has uncovered tales of courage, resilience, and love, and has brought our family together in ways we could not have imagined. We strongly feel as though we have contributed to the preservation of our family’s legacy.

Helping our children to understand their family’s history within the context of larger historical events has deepened their appreciation for the struggles and achievements of previous generations.
